For over 15 years, Jeffrey Zimmerman has devoted his career to providing vigorous representation for individuals facing a broad range of criminal charges. A member of the Virginia and District of Columbia bars, his practice is focused in federal and state courts in the Washington, DC metropolitan area at both the trial and appellate levels.

Mr. Zimmerman firmly believes in getting out in front of any investigation or criminal matter and aggressively seeking to cut off potential prosecutions prior to arrest and formal charge. He counsels individuals who are under investigation by police or federal law enforcement, as well as those who have been subpoenaed to testify before grand juries.
Mr. Zimmerman provides zealous representation at all stages of a criminal investigation and prosecution. An experienced trial litigator, he has been lead counsel in hundreds of bench and jury trials in matters ranging from serious traffic matters to death penalty cases. Recently, Mr. Zimmerman obtained an acquittal for a client in a complex multi-defendant mortgage fraud case brought in the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia.
In addition to serving as trial counsel, Mr. Zimmerman's practice includes a significant focus on post-conviction litigation, including alleged probation and supervised release violations. Recent victories include the dismissal of a federal supervised release violation petition on double jeopardy grounds. Jeffrey Zimmerman is also an accomplished appellate attorney, successfully arguing before state and federal appellate courts, resulting in reversed convictions and lower sentences. Finally, Mr. Zimmerman fights for individuals by collaterally attacking their convictions and sentences through habeas corpus proceedings and motions filed pursuant to 28 United States Code § 2255. Working with his partner, David B. Smith, on a comprehensive, nearly 200-page § 2255 motion, Messrs. Smith and Zimmerman obtained reversals of numerous convictions for money laundering, structuring, and obstruction of justice on behalf of a client in federal district court in Richmond.
Mr. Zimmerman serves as a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Eastern District of Virginia. He is actively involved in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the preeminent organization for the criminal defense bar.
Mr. Zimmerman received his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College and graduated with honors from The American University, Washington College at Law. While in law school, he served on the executive editorial board of, and was published in, The American University Journal of International Law and Policy. Following graduation, he served as Adjunct Faculty at American University, teaching courses in legal research and writing.
