Experienced Forfeiture Defense Lawyers

Protecting The Rights And Interests Of Clients Nationwide

Smith & Zimmerman, PLLC, is a small law firm committed to high-quality representation of criminal defendants at a reasonable cost. Our partners, David B. Smith and Jeffrey D. Zimmerman, have more than 45 years of combined experience practicing criminal law.

Based in Alexandria, Virginia, our firm serves clients nationwide. We are committed to protecting our clients' rights at all stages of criminal proceedings, from the initial investigation through trial, appeals and post-conviction proceedings. Our key areas of focus include:

  • Asset forfeiture: Our firm is known nationwide as an authority in the area of civil and criminal forfeiture. Mr. Smith is the author of the leading treatise on forfeiture law and litigation and was heavily involved in drafting the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2000.
  • Criminal defense: Our attorneys represent clients who have been charged with all types of federal and state offenses. Particular areas of focus include racketeering, money laundering, structuring and other white collar crimes; drug offenses; and restitution and fines.
  • Victims' rights: We help victims of Ponzi schemes and other fraudulent enterprises assert their rights under the Mandatory Victims' Restitution Act and the Crime Victims' Rights Act.

All too often, large firms hand cases over to inexperienced lawyers and then charge their clients a fortune to have more experienced lawyers look over their shoulders. At our firm, all matters are handled directly by our experienced and accomplished attorneys and billed fairly.

From the remarks of House Judiciary Chairman Henry Hyde (R-IL) before the House of Representatives, April 11, 2000, about David Smith's assistance in drafting the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2000:

"And I must thank David Smith, who has been there since the beginning. David helped me draft my first forfeiture reform bill - the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 1993 - and helped draft Senators Leahy's and Hatch's reform bill, and helped draft the Senate-passed bill we are considering today. This bill is truly his accomplishment."
